The Music is Killing Me

In a good way though. Music is really what I love in life. On average I’m listening to some form of music for a good 9 hours a day. Constantly on music blogs I love finding new music and showing people good music. It’s why I got a radio show, KBVR 88.7 Corvallis Mondays from 5-6 or Here. We each need some form of music in our lives, and whatever you have is great just for you. I will almost never criticize people’s musical choices or favorites. I suggest artists that I like, but since music is such a subjective thing it is wrong to expect that people are going to have the same taste as you. I let people listen to what they want to and if I don’t like it, that’s what FSM created headphones for. Finding new music is often difficult for the analog folks though. Going to a record store every day is unfeasible for most people and might even turn some people away from finding new music. Sites like hypem.com and a few others aggregate millions of music blogs a day to find the best new music that people are talking about. No, I’m not being paid by them, I just really like the site.

I’m not really sure what I would do with out music, probably be more proactive and get my work done faster instead of dancing in my room by myself to daft punk. You all do it, Don’t judge me! Music can follow our moods and really plays into how we behave each day. There is upbeat music for when we are happy, sad music for when we are sad, and daft punk for everything else. If we attempt to live our lives to their upmost potential, we first have to realize that music helps us. But sometimes it is good to take off the headphones or turn the stereo down and just listen to the music around us we just need to pump up the jams, have a good time and rock out. Enjoy your music, and stay classy.

Concert Talk: White Fang, Starfucker and Panther 4/11 at Backspace

Having only seen Starfucker play at PDX POP ‘07 I kind of knew what to expect from them. But they were just one of the openers. The set that white fang (is it one word?) played simply astonished me, and although the rest of crowd was typical “indie kid” , I can only dance by folding my arms and bobbing my head, I was into and so was Jeremy and this one other kid that would try to start a mosh, but nobody went along with it. Moshing with 3 people is not as cool as it sounds.

So we continued to rock by ourselves and give shout outs to the guys. I’m pretty sure they were younger than me, but the music was great. The vocals were a little washed out and the TWO drummers kind of had some problems. Bassist I assume had anti-social disorder because I never even saw his face. Despite the fact they they are a young band that doesn’t have a lot of diversity in their music, I can see these kids going a long way. I hope they play at PDX POP ‘08, because if they are not already in the line up, I will put them in it.

Starfucker may not sound like a moshing, party, rock, dance your ass off band. BUT IT IS!! From this band alone I have learned never to expect the show to be anything like the album. They started off with some more down tempo stuff and then worked their way into more dancey stuff that the people there really liked. I found out that the problem was, I was on the wrong side. Backspace is split into two halves, not on purpose, but simply because there is a giant tree fort projection center right in the middle. I was with all the girls that were apparently funazi’s on the left side whereas Jeremy was rocking out on the other side. I immediately switched sides and never went back. In the picture’s following you can see what I mean. It was a great set and they were at their top. At PDX POP only 2 of the 3 guys were there and they did an awesome show. Having the whole team there made it even more awesomer. I really don’t know how to describe the whole set with one word. It kinda blew my mind. I wouldn’t mind going to that show at least 3 more times.

After a solid 45 minutes of hard rockin’, it was time to get to the thing everyone was waiting for. PANTHER. Promoting the release of their vinyl “14ct God”. Which is a great album, by the way. Listening to their music, I had pretty high expectations. And boy did they follow through. Playing stuff like “how well can you swim?” and “you don’t want your hair done” from their first album (when it was just charlie) and stuff like violent diamonds (my personal favorite) from the new album. they had the dvd that came with the cd playing in the back on loop. His voice was perfect and I swear if I wasn’t three feet away from him I would have thought he was just playing the cd. Being a heavily electronic band, I expected many things to come from post recordings, yet he did all voice modulation and drums their and guitar also. It was a great set and I’m kinda bummed that they are going to the UK for pretty much the whole summer.

Movie Review: I’m Not There

While this review may be a bit late, I’m very glad that I made time to watch it. As you may have heard this film is a biopic about Bob Dylan and he is played by six very different actors. I’m not a big Dylan fan so I can really only grade this movie from what it is since I have no preconceived notions about how it should portray his life. That being said it was a wonderful movie and if it really shows what his life was like, then his life was made to be turned into a movie. The acting by everyone is superb and it is hard to call out one person and say that they did a better job. The director obviously wanted people to look at this movie without making them analyze it. He just wanted to show what one man’s life was like.

Being that I have a background with photography and movie making, I look at every movie thinking about how I could have done it better. This is one movie where I think I could not, and would not, change anything. Some of the editing in this movie is fantastic and makes you think, crap, I wish I had done that. One problem that I have with many movies is that they light there whole movie either very bright or very dark and the lighting will almost never pertain to the emotion of the scene. But not in this one, When something bad happens it’s dark, happy =light. It makes me happy that there are still good filmmakers alive. Now if only we can get some original stories…

Something I feel is necessary to talk about is the music. It’s all Dylan’s work, except for one by The Monkees, but not always performed by him. All types of people did covers throughout this movies, men, women, bands, well known and indie. This is not a music review so I will save my comments on the individual songs for later. It is a very good movie with some brilliant actors and good music. This is one you should at least try to see in theaters soon. If your too busy at least rent it, you know what, as long as you see, I’m good. Have a good weekend
