Day 6
A Voyage within a Voyage
9/10
Today we were in a car for a large part of the day. It started with a metro that went to a train station and that train ended in St. Denis, a nice little suburb of Paris. When we were there, we needed to pick up a car, since we couldn’t find the office, a taxi was needed. It was much better than a U.S. taxi though, they use Mercedes here. I’m glad that we got it because it would have been a very long walk. We got upgraded to a Zephira instead of the dinky twingo that we would have started with. These are French cars that we were renting I was scared driving again and was much happier when we were far from civilization. And we drove and drove and drove some more. It’s a long drive from St. Denis to Caen. I think this will be a short entry since we drove so much.
Our first stop was at the musee de deparquement. A museum of all of the beaches and the landing of D-day. It was very cool to see the real Omaha beach, but you get a very patriotic feeling. You want to thank all the men that gave there lives and also the ones that are still here I meant alive but I couldn’t really think of a good way to say it. It’s really one of the only major battlefields that I’ve ever seen. Since we had been driving so long, the creperie was lookin’ mighty good. Ham and cheese on a gellete is real tasty. We had to get on the road again. This time it was see the American Memorial Cemetery, Grandpa’s best friend was missing after the Leopoldville went down (if you don’t know the story Google it). We got some special treatment since he’s a veteran and disaster survivor and all. It was very nice, he played taps for his friend and we took some pictures. And just took a moment for all the people there. We took our time there and when we were both ready to leave, we got a move on. It was a very moving place that I still am unable to describe
Although it wasn’t a part of the original plan, we decided to go to Monte Saint Michel. Mostly because I bugged my Grandfather into going there It’s a place that I’ve always wanted to go to since I first saw a picture of it. It was even more amazing in person. Although it is a major tourist trap, the place wasn’t very crowded and I was able to get some good pictures. The lighting was perfect, overcast overhead, but there was sun in the background. I was very lucky, as most good photographers are. It’s also a very photogenic place and almost anyone can take a decent picture there. I’m very glad that I was able to go. After we climbed up about halfway to the top, we decided that was enough and decided to head back to the car. We wanted to get as far south as we could, and we picked Rennes as a point of interest. We ended up about 9 miles north of the city after we found a little hotel that is almost a truck stop. The food was good and the room wasn’t full of rats and peeling wallpaper. We wanted to leave early the next day, so we got to bed before the rugby game ended. Considering it was New Zealand vs. Italy and NZ had 43 points in less than half time, I’m giving them the game. Tomorrow we drive to more famous locations from WWII. It should be fun.
